Jean Marie Mazzola

April 6, 2026 Eric Berube

Jean Marie Mazzola, 85, of Beverly, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on September 7, 1940, in Salem, Massachusetts, Jean was the cherished daughter of Antonio and Jeanette Guerriero. Jean was raised in Salem, where she developed the curiosity, independence, ambition, and strength that would define her life.

Jean graduated from Salem High School Class of 1958 where she participated in band, and was also a graduate of Merrimack College. She went on to build a long and meaningful career as a lab technician and phlebotomist in the North Shore area. She later created her own blood-draw service with her business partner and dear friend, Sara Freedland- an accomplishment that reflected her work ethic, compassion, and the steady hands so many patients came to trust and rely upon.

Jean loved to travel and had a special fondness for warm, sunny places. Whether she was exploring new countries or escaping winter for sand, palm trees, and time with her dear friends Sandy and Peter Walor, she brought those bright and peaceful places home with her.

Jean was a devoted mother to her three sons. She worked the 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on-call shift at North Shore Children’s Hospital so she could prepare breakfast, see them off to school and still be present for every football, hockey, soccer, baseball, and lacrosse game. She always put her children first, and her love showed in every sacrifice she made for them.

To her grandchildren, she was simply “Mimi,” a name she treasured. Jean adored her twins LJ and Jessie and loved being a fixture in their lives. She left an imprint that will last forever. Jean delighted in their laughter, their milestones, and the everyday moments that made being their grandmother one of her greatest joys.

When her boys were young, Jean was an enthusiastic baker, known for making specialty birthday cakes not only for her own family but also for friends and loved ones. She enjoyed hosting, loved a celebration, and most of all appreciated time with dear neighborhood friends, especially the Parisellas. Jean was often the life of the party and always enjoyed a good glass of wine.

Jean was predeceased by her parents and by her beloved husband, Anthony “Tony” Mazzola who served as Chief of Nuclear Medicine at Salem Hospital for close to 40 years.

Jean is survived by her three children: Anthony Mazzola and his wife, Allison; Jason Mazzola and his wife, Lizzie; and Nicholas Mazzola and his wife, Amie. She also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren, Jason and Jessica Mazzola, who brought endless joy to her life; her sister, Ann Fouhey, and Ann’s husband, William; and her nieces, Kerry and Shannon Fouhey, and their children, all of whom held a special place in her heart. She also leaves behind her best friends Sandy Walor and Sara Freedland.

Jean’s life was defined by love for her family, her friends, and the simple, beautiful moments that made up her days. Her warmth, steadiness, and vibrant spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours in the Berube & Sons Funeral Home, 191 Lafayette St. Salem, MA on Friday, April 24, 2026 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and also to meet inside the main gate of St. Mary Cemetery, 226 North St. Salem, MA on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 10:45 for a graveside service at 11:00. A celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the FRAXA Research Foundation (www.fraxa.org) as this was a cause Jean championed.
