Bertram L. Berube

June 1936- September 2021

Bertram Berube, 85, of Hudson, FL, formerly of Newburyport, MA, died on September 25 in Tampa, FL, after a long and brave struggle with many illnesses. He was born in Salem, MA, son of the late Laurent and Rose (Lebrun) Berube.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sharon; son Brian Berube and wife Elyse of Haverhill, MA; daughter Kathryn Ortega and husband Ed of Tampa, FL; sister Carolyn Guarino of Marblehead, MA; and sister Janice Leclerc and husband Ronald of Peabody, MA. Bert leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, and friends.

He was predeceased by brothers Roland Berube and Donald Berube and wife Dorothy of Salem, MA.

He graduated from St. Joseph Academy, Salem State College, and Boston University. Passionate about education, Bert worked as a teacher, school principal, and guidance counselor for over 20 years at grades from elementary through high school. He was most proud of his accomplishments working with high school dropouts to re-enroll them in school. He was dearly loved by his students, many of whom sought his advice even after high school. His next careers were in insurance and with the IRS.

He was a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill, FL and the Knights of Columbus. Golf was his favorite hobby. He was known for teaching athletic skills and for inspiring good sportsmanship on the baseball and softball teams he coached. He was an amazing card player, rarely letting his opponent win. Bert loved the ocean, often summering at the beach. His wonderful sense of humor, joke- and story-telling, generosity, concern for others, smile, and calm demeanor will be remembered.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: BoysTown, PO Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 68010, or other charity of choice.
