Marilyn Lois (Benjamin) Halpern, 93, passed away Thursday morning, January 7, 2021 in her home in the company of her loving daughter following a lengthy illness.

Born in Erie, PA, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Alyce Benjamin. . She met her beloved husband, the late psychiatrist Abraham L. Halpern at Warren State Mental Hospital where they both worked.

Marilyn stopped working outside of the home, based in Mamaroneck, NY, upon marriage in order to raise her children as well as to accompany her husband to medical and human rights conferences around the globe.

Marilyn was a voracious reader, reading 4-6 books/week as well as reading the NYT cover to cover daily. She loved her family and friends, the sound of the ocean, and loved to shop, especially for others. She had a green thumb outside and inside the home where orchids and violets flourished. She was an avid collector of art glass, at one time having one of the largest collections of cameo glass.

She was a thoughtful and caring soul who always hand knit booties for someone upon learning a baby was on the way. As an animal lover and supporter, she never missed an opportunity to coo over pets she encountered during her walks. Almost everyone in her employ regarded her as a mother figure rather than an employer, many of whom are still lifelong extended family members. She loved hosting large Thanksgiving dinners, often including those who had nowhere else to go.

Marilyn is survived by her children Lon, Marnen, Emily, and John; stepchildren Howard, Chaia, and Mark, along with 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

A gravesite service, TBA, will take place in NY this summer. To send a condolence to the family, please comment below.
