Dionisios H. Mataragas, 78

February 27, 1941 – September 6, 2020

Salem- Dionisios H. Mataragas, 78, of Salem, passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, September 6, 2020 at NSMC Salem Hospital. He was the husband of Anastasia (Solomos) Mataragas.

Born in Zakinthos, Greece, Dionisios was the son of the late Christos and Olga (Hikalis) Mataragas. He came to America in 1976 to provide a better life for his family. Moving to Chicago, Dionisios painted some of the biggest bridges in the city. Later, he and his family moved to Alaska and he began his career in the restaurant business. He was the owner of Pizza Olympia in Anchorage AK, before coming to Massachusetts in 1985. His hobby and passion was gardening, spending countless hours at his garden and having the pleasure of giving his family and friends fresh fruit and vegetables.

Surviving him along with his wife, Anastasia (Solomos) Mataragas of Salem, are his sons, Chris Mataragas of Salem, and Tony Mataragas and his wife Shannon of Salem, his grandchildren Damon and Zoey, and his siblings and nieces and nephews living in Greece.

His funeral Mass will be held Friday, September 11, 2020 at 10:00 at St. Vasilios Church, 5 Paleologos St. Peabody, MA 01960. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Vasilios Church. To send a condolence to the family please comment below.

St. Vasilios Church, like every church, does have a limit of people to safely attend the funeral Mass on Friday. Please be aware there is a chance every person will not be able to be allowed inside. There will be a time allowed after the Mass to safely express your condolences to the family if any were unable to attend.

Greenlawn cemetery has a limit of ten people close by at graveside. Friends are welcomed to attend the graveside service after church but may be asked to stand away from the immediate area socially distanced or to remain in their cars. Friends may also socially distanced gather on the outside of the cemetery near the corner of Orne st. and Sargent St. where the grave is located near the edge of the cemetery.
