October 6, 1924 - November 23, 2021

John Edward “Jack” Maher, Sr. 97, died November 23, 2021 at the Pilgrim Skilled Rehab Facility, in Peabody, MA.

U.S. Army WWII Veteran

Jack was born on October 6 in Waterbury, Ct in 1924 to Leo G. Maher and Theresa Maher. Jack was a WWII veteran who joined the military in 1944 and was a Private First Class serving in the 776 Liberty Artillery Battalion, Patton’s 3rd Army, in Normandy, D Day 6, and was injured in the Battle of St. Lo. Jack received many war ribbons and while recovering from his war wounds in a hospital in England he met Margaret Eardley. After marrying in Edinburgh, Scotland, Jack and Margaret came home to the states and settled in Waterbury, CT where they raised a family of four children.

Jack worked in the family business driving a milk truck, and in 1959, moved the family to the North Shore in MA where he was promoted to management in Sealtest. Moving near the ocean sparked a love of boating which inspired him to build a boat, which he did in his garage. Jack was also an avid member of the North Shore Frogmen’s Scuba Diving Club, which led him to joining Palmer Cove Yacht Club in the early 60’s. He became a lifelong member of the Club and twice became Commodore, and was also a lifelong member of the Commodore’s Club of America.

Jack's love of boating made for many an adventure aboard the Queen Bee, which became known at every yacht club along the eastern seaboard! Jack was also a Yankees fan and the Yankees jacket given to him on his 70th birthday from his children, was a favorite and he wore it with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. As a WWII veteran, Jack also became active in the Marblehead, VFW post and Disabled American Vets.

Jack was fun-loving, quick with a helping hand, and if you asked him what he thought, be prepared for the answer!

Jack is survived by his wife, Dolores Maher and three children, Maureen M. Bik, John E. Maher, Jr., and Patrick Brian Maher and was predeceased by his son Gerald L. Maher. Jack’s 8 grandchildren, Thomas Bik, Heather Bik, John Maher III, Eric Maher, Colin Maher, Gerald K. Maher, Maeve Maher, and Glenna Maher, who predeceased him; and 9 great grandchildren, and 14 nieces and nephews, all gave Jack great joy and he remembered them to the end. Jack is also survived by his sister, Theresann D’Angelo of Kittery, ME and predeceased by his sister, Arlene Baker of Prospect, CT and brother, Leo G. Maher, Jr. of Wareham, MA.
