Salem, MA - Raymond J. Plante, 93, of Salem, passed away Friday morning, August 17, 2018, in the NSMC after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Anita (Theriault) Plante.
Born in Salem, Raymond was the youngest child of Joseph and Marie Anne (Dube) Plante. Raymond graduated from St. Joseph School in Salem before joining the U.S. Army during World War II. He served his country honorably for three years as a heavy weapons crewman. Returning home, Ray worked for many years with the former Market Forge in Everett as a millwright mechanic. He loved photography and was always an active man. He ran for most of his life for enjoyment and in road races in Falmouth, the Boston Marathon, and many other events. When running became more difficult Raymond began cycling, and in his later years he walked. Raymond and his wife Anita loved to dance. Raymond met Anita at the former Salem Willows Ballroom where they continued to go dance for many years along with trips to the Hampton Beach Casino for dancing.
Along with his wife of 71 years, Anita (Theriault) Plante, Raymond is survived by his two daughters, Adele Lofgren of Jacksonville, Fla., and Colette Marchand and her husband Hector of Upland, Calif.; and a grandson David Marchand of Los Angeles, Calif. Raymond was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Albert, Andre, Wilfred, Elmira, Mary Jane, and Rose.
A private celebration of Raymond's life will be held on his birthday. Those who wish may make a donation in Raymond's name to Friends of the Salem Council on Aging, P.O. Box 1077, Salem, MA 01970. To send a condolence to the family, please visit www.BerubeFuneralHome.com.
