Edith D. (Chalifour) Hoar, 91
March 27, 1926 - September 16, 2017
SALEM - Edith Demerise (Chalifour) Hoar, 91 passed away peacefully with family by her side. Edith was the daughter of Albert and Denaige (Blanchette) Chalifour of North Salem.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Atty. David S. Hoar. Edith was also predeceased by her brothers Raymond, Donald and Robert Chalifour as well as her son-in-law Randy Whitten.
A lifelong resident of Salem, Edith worked at the family owned North Street Arena which stood where the current North Street overpass is today. Edith attended Salem High School, Class of 1943. An accomplished piano player and dancer she was truly the "Belle of North Street". As a young lady Edith worked at General Electric and also for a time as a telephone operator at New England Telephone. Along with raising her seven children, Edith enjoyed oil painting, gardening, playing golf and going to the beach. Most notably at Osgood Park where she lived for 68 years as well as her beloved Devereaux Beach in Marblehead where she met her husband. Edith was a long time volunteer and participant in the Salem Garden Club. She also volunteered at Salem Hospital, working in the gift shop in her later years.
Edith was a kind, nurturing, devoted and loving mother to her seven children and their spouses, Cynthia Whitten, Colleen Scaparotti and her husband Richard, Steve Hoar, Connie Hoar, Nancy Pinto and her husband Steve, Jack Hoar and his wife Linda, and Mary Smith and her husband Jeff. Edith is also survived by her grandchildren with their spouses Tyson and Beth Whitten, Seth and Jessica Whitten. Grandchildren Lauren and Julia Scaparotti, David Hoar III, Michael Pinto, David, Kerrin and Reagan O'Neill and Shane Smith. Edith is also survived by her great grandchildren Hugh, Chet, Brynn and Graham Whitten.
At the families request, services will be private and performed by Berube and Sons funeral home in Salem.
